Bandai Namco announced Dark Souls Remastered is releasing on May 25 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam for $39.99.

The game brings the Dark Souls universe to Nintendo consoles for the first time while introducing richer detail to PlayStation and Xbox players.

Dark Souls Remastered is playable with dynamic 4K resolution for those playing on PlayStation 4 Pro, Xbox One X, and Steam. The remastered version maintains the original Dark Souls vision that has challenged players for years. However, this version will not include HDR support or new assets.

FromSoftware originally released Dark Souls in 2011 as a spiritual successor to the 2009 PlayStation 3 exclusive Demon’s Souls. The Souls series has been revered for its challenge that forges players’ skills through death and experience. Dark Souls introduced nine covenants allowing players to interact online, a haunting interconnected world, and deeply rewarding combat.

Remastered uses dedicated servers to allow up to six players to join together online to fight against each other, challenge invading enemies, or work to fell bosses. This version of the game will also include Artorias of the Abyss, Dark Souls’ only piece of DLC.

Quick Take

Souls games have been a treasured property by gamers for years. The elusive lore, fantastic combat, and captivating world have drawn players in over the course of five games. FromSoftware teased something at 2017’s Game Awards which may or may not be Bloodborne 2. Dark Souls Remastered will fill in a large gap for many yet there are still likely a number of us who hope that Demon’s Souls will get a similar treatment in the near future.
