The sudden reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart game might inspire some rebuilds and new models in LEGO Mario Kart in the future.
Earlier this week, Nintendo decided to finally lift the curtain on the sequel console to the Nintendo Switch and within the short teaser video, a first look at what is undoubtedly the next Mario Kart game is featured, shortly after LEGO Mario Kart finally debuted. The range only covers previous Mario Kart games, as expected, but should it continue later this year or next year, a wave for the next Mario Kart game would be ideal.
As well as timing perfectly with the latest addition to LEGO Super Mario, the next game already includes plenty of vehicles and locations to inspire the LEGO Mario Kart designers in the future. As well as the Yoshi’s drive-through restaurant, which would make for a fun facade model, there’s a new snowmobile kart driven by Rosalina in the trailer. The tracks and skis would be an interesting addition to the new range.
More importantly, the new Mario Kart game is redesigning two key components of the franchise. The standard kart is getting a makeover with the addition of visible fuel tanks and an overall more curved aesthetic. While it’s notably different from the design of that in 72032 Standard Kart, it’s similar enough where a LEGO redesign would not be required.
By contrast, Donkey Kong’s new look is reminiscent of his original appearance in early game artwork as well as in 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. His eyes are much less pronounced than his current design, which is depicted as a figure in 72033 Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo.
Should this be the new design moving forward, a change to this existing figure would be necessary for future LEGO Super Mario appearances. Thankfully, something as simple as changing the design on the decorated tile with his eyes on would be sufficient since his proportions are otherwise similar.
The Nintendo Switch 2 seems set for a release later this year, presumably alongside the new Mario Kart game as a launch title, and whether the LEGO Group has more Mario Kart sets planned for the near future or not, the new game has plenty of content to inspire future releases. Here’s what is currently rumoured and confirmed for LEGO Super Mario in 2025.
