Square Enix has posted a new Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth interview featuring producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi.
World Map Realism and Density
Various comments about development and project growth are mentioned, including the latest entry’s depiction of the world map. While the original Final Fantasy VII’s map “sought to express the vastness of the world on a scale different from that of Midgar,” there wasn’t much besides combat.
So, Rebirth aimed to rectify that shortcoming, expressing that expansiveness more realistically, which can be primarily attributed to modern technology and the countless dense activities available. Kitase notes explicitly that the PlayStation 5 SSD helped the team accomplish feats they couldn’t achieve in the original game.
Futurism and Fantasy
Tangentially related to the original Final Fantasy VII, Kitase discusses how the series took on the form of a more classic fantasy setting until Final Fantasy VI, when 3D CG technology became feasible, leading to the team “wanting to create something newer and more futuristic than a fantasy world.” As a result, fantasy tropes were adapted into modern terms, like magic basically being mako.
In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, it’s stated that there was great care in ensuring visually that mako sustains the world, which Kitase felt was lacking in the original game. So, the background design of the Remake project has aided in better portraying this fact, like the prominent mako pipes in Kalm.
The rest of the interview delves into several other topics, including Hamaguchi teasing the apparent veiled tough front Sephiroth emits.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will arrive on PC on January 23, 2025.
