Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is a daring and richly immersive addition to Ubisoft’s fan favorite series. Here, the action takes place in the rich and treacherous landscape of Feudal Japan, with the players afforded the uncommon luxury of seeing this world through the eyes of not one, but two engaging protagonists: Naoe, a clever and talented kunoichi, and Yasuke, a noble yet troubled samurai. Shadows skillfully weaves their distinct backgrounds into one tale that delves into loyalty, betrayal, and identity, presenting a new dual-character dynamic that revives the series.
Placed within the late Sengoku era, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows brings the struggle and tensions within Japanese society in that era to vivid life. Naoe’s narrative sweeps her into the covert life of assassins, ninja families, and espionage, while Yasuke’s is set in the harsh samurai code of honor and his quest for redemption from a former life as a foreigner in Japan.
The two tales provide players with two distinct views. Naoe is skilled at infiltrations and espionage, while Yasuke has trouble with the moral gray area of war and his role in a fragmented country. Their tales intersect to reveal a larger conspiracy between warlords and the mysterious “Shadow Council” behind the scenes pulling the strings.
The game is improved over how it is at combining historical verisimilitude with good drama. Feudal Japanese environments are presented with varied landscapes—busy villages and peaceful temples to imposing castles under blooming cherry blossoms.
Shadows introduces new mechanics to support its two-protagonist strategy. Both heroes have special abilities to support player customization throughout the game. Naoe is geared towards stealth, movement speed, and accuracy, with the availability of shurikens, smoke bombs, and a hook shot to traverse dangerous terrain and silently kill enemies. Yasuke tackles brawn, melee combat, and use of his legendary katana, which requires finesse and time planning for successful battles.
The inclusion of a “Protagonist Swap” feature provides the ability to swap out between characters for missions or play through their individual paths single-player. This feature provides a sense of freedom and variety as well as cooperation and synergy with the story.
Open-world experience provides multiple methods of exploration with weather effects and day/night cycles influencing the effectiveness of the protagonists. For example, Naoe excels in its form of darkness while Yasuke excels at dawn, providing tactical decision-making about when to go out on quests.
Visually, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is a treat to behold. The artwork brings Feudal Japan to life in glorious detail, placing players inside it and allowing them to soak in its ugliness and beauty. From mist-shrouded forests to bustling market squares, all are alive and realistic. Naoe and Yasuke are both brought to life with loving attention, their animation matching their respective personalities—Naoe’s quick, fluid movements contrasting starkly with Yasuke’s powerful, deliberate strides.
