This is a non-region week across the state, but there are still some important games on the schedule. Here is a look at five of them involving Coastal teams:


Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Hurricane Field, Flomaton

Last week: Escambia County lost to W.S. Neal 27-7; Flomaton defeated St. Michael 53-21.

Region record: Escambia County 2-1 in Class 4A, Region 1; Flomaton 2-0 in Class 3A, Region 1.

On the Air: None.

The skinny: Escambia County holds a commanding 34-1-3 advantage in the series, but Flomaton won its only game last year 28-14 and went on to win the Class 3A state title. … The Blue Devils started the season with three straight wins before last week’s loss. QB Jacob Hammac was 14-of-23 for 136 yards in the loss with two interceptions. Tyson Moorer caught three passes for 60 yards. Craig Brown rushed for 58 yards on 10 carries. This week’s game is the second in three consecutive road games for first-year coach Scott Mason’s team … Flomaton remains the No. 1 team in Class 3A. Coach Doug Vickery moved reigning 3A Back of the Year and Troy commit Daquan Johnson back to quarterback last week after his son, Zeb, was lost for the year with a knee injury. Johnson led the Hurricanes to an easy victory. His team led 47-7 at the half and reserves played in the third and fourth quarters. The Hurricanes racked up 326 yards rushing behind Travon Brown (56 yards, 3 TDs) and Jate’vius Franklin (126 yards, 2 TDs). Johnson had just one significant carry – a 58-yard TD run around left end. The Hurricanes have won nine straight games since losing the regular-season finale against Southern Choctaw last season. Vickery is 93-57 in 14 years as the team’s head coach.


Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Municipal Stadium, Brewton

Last week: Hillcrest-Evergreen beat Andalusia 34-28; T.R. Miller lost to Bayside Academy 30-29.

Region record: Hillcrest-Evergreen is 2-1 in Class 4A, Region 1; T.R. Miller is 2-1 in Class 3A, Region 1.

On the Air: None.

The skinny: T.R. Miller leads the overall series 17-2 and has won the last four games and 11 of the last 12. The Tigers won 14-0 a year ago. … Coach Clinton Smith is 38-21 in his fifth year at Hillcrest, including the Class 3A state title in 2017. His team’s losses this year have come to Greenville (12-6) in the opener and Escambia County (19-15) two weeks ago. … T.R. Miller is coming off a 30-29 loss to previously winless Bayside Academy. Darius Webb had two receptions for 100 yards and a TD in the loss. Narkavis Campbell rushed for 97 yards on seven carries. This is the final game of a three-game homestand for the Tigers, who must travel to Mobile Christian and Thomasville the first two weeks of October. Brent Hubbert is in his first year as head coach at T.R. Miller after 15 years and three state titles at Class 1A Maplesville.

Last week: Fairhope defeated Davidson 14-3; Daphne did not play.

Region record: Fairhope is 2-2 in Class 7A, Region 1; Daphne is 1-2 in Class 6A, Region 1

On the Air: None.

The skinny: Daphne leads the overall series with Fairhope 23-7, but the Pirates have won four of the last five. They won each of the last two games by an identical score in overtime – 20-17. … Despite being riddled by injuries, Fairhope is still in playoff contention in Class 7A. Cyline Koen scored a pair of third-quarter TDs last week to help the Pirates stave off the Warriors. He finished with 122 yards on 26 carries. Brian Sledge and TJ Banks each had interceptions for the Pirates. Tim Carter is 25-22 in his fifth season at Fairhope. … Daphne defeated B.C. Rain 45-0 on Sept. 13. The Trojans had a dominating 35-7 win over Spanish Fort in Week 2 erased by forfeit. Dual-threat QB Trent Battle and the Daphne offense is averaging 28.5 points a game, despite being held to just 13 by No. 1 Saraland. Battle is 51-of-84 for 701 yards and 6 TDs. He also has rushed for 247 yards and 6 TDs on 39 carries. Tyler Bradley has rushed for 185 yards and a score on 41 carries. Jaquan Myles (20 catches, 211 yards, 2 TDs) and Malik McClain (3 TDs) are key receiving weapons. Kenny King is 23-15 in his fourth year as head coach at his alma mater.


Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Ervin S. Cooper Stadium, Mobile

Last week: Mobile Christian defeated Thomasville 42-9 on the road; UMS-Wright defeated Clarke County 24-0 on the road.

Region record: Mobile Christian is 2-0 in Class 3A, Region 1; UMS-Wright is 3-0 in Class 4A, Region 1.

On the Air: TV – WJTC UTV-44; Radio – WNTM-AM 710.

The skinny: UMS-Wright won the only previous two meetings against Mobile Christian, including a 37-7 victory a year ago. … The Leopards have lost their previous two non-region games this year to Pensacola Catholic (20-10) and Faith Academy (42-24). However, Ronnie Cottrell’s team bounced back last week with a region win on the road. Jason Brooks scored three touchdowns and had two interceptions for Mobile Christian. Junior LB Deontae Lawson had 17 tackles and two assists. He also scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run. Nick Ellis rushed for 162 yards and a TD on 11 carries – an average of 14.7 yards per carry. QB Kason Lincke ran for 81 yards and a TD on nine carries. … UMS-Wright has been No. 1 in Class 4A since the 2018 preseason poll. The Bulldogs won their 23rd straight game last week. That marks the longest current winning streak in the AHSAA. Symon Smith has rushed for 322 yards on 92 carries. QB Trey Singleton is completing 55 percent of his passes for 354 yards and four TDs with just two interceptions. WR Keyshawn Woodyard has 4 TD catches in four games. Reigning Class 4A Lineman of the Year Will Breland had 65 tackles and a sack. Safety Edwin White has three interceptions.

MURPHY (3-1) AT VIGOR (2-2)

Time/location: 7 p.m. Friday, Prichard Stadium

Last week: Murphy was off; Vigor lost at home to Jackson 18-0.

Region record: Murphy is 2-1 in Class 7A, Region 1; Vigor is 2-1 in Class 5A, Region 1.

On the Air: None.

The skinny: Murphy leads the overall series 35-33-1, but Vigor has won the last two meetings. … The Panthers are off to a strong start in Rico Jackson’s first season as head coach. The 3-1 mark is the school’s best after four games since 2015. Murphy’s only loss was a 28-6 setback against Class 7A No. 2 McGill-Toolen on Aug. 29. The Panthers defeated Mary G. Montgomery 30-21 on Sept. 13. This is the third of four straight road games for Murphy, which plays at No. 6 Theodore next week. QB Alex Howell is 52-of-92 for 827 yards and 8 TDs. Theris Wheeler (45 carries, 188 yards) is the team’s leading rusher. The top receivers are Adrian Milton (16 receptions, 281 yards, 4 TDs) and Tanaka Scott (15 receptions, 191 yards, 2 TDs). Kharon Marion (29 tackles) and Jimari Butler (26 tackles, 4 sacks, 15 QB hurries) lead the defense. … Vigor had its modest two-game win streak snapped last week by the Aggies. The Wolves were held to just 131 yards of total offense and Vigor quarterbacks were intercepted twice. The two teams combined for 20 penalties for 250 yards. Deric Scott is 39-16 in his fifth year as the team’s head coach.
