Nintendo fans are beginning to speculate that the company has been teasing something related with Super Mario Sunshine.
Nintendo fans are sometimes known to be pretty speculative. Myself included. I love getting caught up in the deep rabbit holes of Nintendo Direct predictions. And once again, fans have begun speculating the revival of Super Mario Sunshine based solely off of this tweet of Mario eating a watermelon.

Besides this might being the first time anyone has seen Mario with finger and toenails, this tweet has caused quite a stir with some in the Nintendo community. Of course this is probably just a fun little drawing and tweet Nintendo thought of sharing with its audience. But it could be much more according to who you ask.
Notice the wording of the tweet. “No matter where your summer odyssey took you, we hope it was filled with sunshine.” Some believe that might be a slight hint at some upcoming Super Mario Odyssey DLC featuring something Sunshine related.
Now of course you can’t base this speculation off of just one tweet. So lets take a look at some footage Nintendo recorded from Gamescom. If you take a look at the 30 minute gameplay demos of Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Link’s Awakening, you might notice something a little particular sitting on the table.

There it is. A big ass watermelon and pineapple. There is a notoriously terrible mission in Super Mario Sunshine that has you bring a giant watermelon across the map. On top of that, you can constantly find pineapples across every world in Sunshine along with Isle Delfino. Plus there is a little Mario figurine that is neatly placed in front of the two.
However, don’t get your hopes up to much. Nintendo was showing off a new level in Luigi’s Mansion 3 that contains a whole lot of ginormous watermelons and during the trade sequence in Link’s Awakening, one of the items link gets is a pineapple. So, this could all just be one big coincidence.
I for one would love to see a revival of Super Mario Sunshine. I have always believed that it is criminally underrated and many pass on it because it might not stick to the typical level design found in 3D Mario games. Whether it be a remake, a sequel, or some DLC for Super Mario Odyssey, it would be great to have it back. But, most likely, this is all just one big coincidence and Nintendo just wanted to wish everyone a great Summer and show off Mario munching on some watermelon.
If you want to go a bit deeper in the story, I would highly recommend this video from Arlo.
