SAN MATEO, Cali. (WBRC) – Anyone who happens to boot up their old PlayStation 3 may be in for a surprise as the 19-year-old console has a software update to perform.

Sony announced software update 4.92 for the PS3 Wednesday morning on their @AskPlayStation account on X.

The last PS3 update came roughly one year ago on Feb. 27, 2024.

Little is known what the new update actually does. Much like the two updates before it, all PlayStation says is that it “improves system performance.”

The update requires 200MB of free space to install.

One user on X summed up fan sentiment perfectly, simply asking “Why?”

Other users warned against accepting the update, suggesting it could be Sony attempting to block gamers from “jailbreaking” the classic console.

Regardless of the reason, it’s another sign of the longevity of consoles in the age of the internet, with manufacturers able to keep their hardware up to date decades after release.
