One person was killed Thursday night following a shooting at a Mobile park, according to the Mobile Police Department.

The shooting occurred at Sage Park at about 9:30 resulting in a woman and a man being struck by gunfire.

Both were taken to the hospital but the woman died from her injuries.

An outpouring of Facebook posts from family, friends and community members identified the victim as Frenicka Craig.

Shykethia Craig, Frenicka’s older sister, posted after the shooting saying that Frenicka was “gone.”

One post by Woogang TV asking the community to pray for Frenicka’s family has garnered over 1,000 shares.

“Rest in Peace Frenicka Craig,” the post said. “Tonight at Sage Park during a basketball event, the young lady known as Frenicka Craig was a victim of gun violence at Sage Park tonight. She was a former student athlete that played basketball at Vigor High School (Class of 2015) then played collegiate basketball at Coastal Alabama Community College in 2017. Please keep this family, her friends and our community in your prayers.”

Dozens of other posts memorialized Frenicka and called on the gun violence in Mobile to end.

Mobile Mayor Sandy Simpson released a statement denouncing the violence while saying that Craig and the other victim were just innocent bystanders trying to enjoy a basketball game.

“It is heartbreaking and frustrating to once again be addressing a cowardly and reckless act of violence in one of our city parks,” Stimpson said. “Last night, a young woman enjoying a basketball game at Sage Park lost her life, another individual was seriously injured, and dozens more were traumatized after individuals who weren’t participating in the games targeted someone on the court with gunfire.”

Stimpson also added that more security cameras were being installed in public parks and he authorized the police increase their presence at public facilities.

“Over the last month, we have installed 30 new cameras in multiple parks and will be aggressively continuing that effort in the coming weeks,” Stimpson said. “I have also authorized the Mobile Police Department to use any resources necessary to increase close patrols and assign officers to parks and public facilities that are open after dark.”

More information regarding the shooting is forthcoming, according to the police.
