Counterplay Games, the developer behind PS5 launch game Godfall, appears to have closed according to fresh LinkedIn posts reporting on layoffs and closures within the gaming industry. It’s reported Counterplay Games has closed along with Toadman Interactive and Freejam, with the former best known for Immortal: Unchained and the latter a free-to-play PC title named Robocraft.
PlayStation Lifestyle did some additional digging and discovered the studio was “disbanded” last month after working with Jackalyptic Games on a project. “Unfortunately we were unable to continue our partnership into the new year and CPG was disbanded,” an employee wrote.
Best known for being the first game confirmed for PS5 at The Game Awards in 2019, the final product did not live up to the initial wave of excitement its announcement created. With a Metacritic rating of 61, we were slightly less impressed than others, having awarded a 5/10 rating in our Godfall PS5 review.
We concluded: “If everything Godfall had to offer was as good as its satisfying combat system, we would be looking at a darn good PS5 launch game. However, in reality, that’s the only thing it has to boast about. An inconsequential loot system, recycled environments, and a frustrating mission structure thwart any sort of enjoyment the game might offer.”
The game later received a PS4 version, removing a bit of shine from its original reveal as a big PS5, current-gen offering. Were you a fan of Godfall? Mourn the loss of Counterplay Games in the comments below.
