How much will Nintendo Switch 2 cost? What will the price be on the launch bundle? Let’s dive in. The new Nintendo console is officially inbound and likely this summer, but what will the new Switch 2 price be? While we do know a fair amount about the new console – backwards compatibility, likely Mario Kart 9 launch title, magnetic Joy-Con, larger display/form-factor, and more – there are also a ton of questions remaining. Can the Joy-Con also be used like a mouse? What is the actual Switch 2 release date? and, perhaps most importantly, what is the Nintendo Switch 2 price going to be?
How much will Nintendo Switch 2 cost?
While we do know more information is inbound come April 2, 2025 when Nintendo will host a seemingly dedicated Switch 2 Direct. This will likely answer most, if not all of these questions, including locking down a specific launch date, pre-order details, and potentially more than just the Mario Kart 9 launch title. It will also be very surprising if Nintendo doesn’t reveal how much the Switch 2 will cost during the April showcase.
There have been a number of rumors and leakers suggesting what the price will be, some even seem very close to sure about it. And some trustworthy sources seem to think it’s going to get quite a significant price hike over the still current-generation machine.
I think we all reluctantly assumed it would be more expensive this time around, all while hoping it would not be by all that much. We are not seeing any predictions in the realm of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, but we are talking about something to the effect of $100 or more here.
The machine is larger, includes what at least appear to be even more functional Joy-Con, and we can only assume it has more powerful internals, so a price hike is seemingly imminent.
Switch 2 price and potential Mario Kart launch bundle
Some reports cite leakers, or those with some kind of inside sources, suggesting a June release date and a price tag at $449 and $499 here in the US. Why, you ask, is there two prices listed? Well, it would appear that Mario Kart 9 game (or what looked very much like it was an early look at a new Mario Kart title) from the first-look trailer is going to get packaged in as a launch title for an extra $50.
I for one assumed Nintendo would milk the full $60 sticker price (and hopefully not raise all of its first-party titles up to a $70 MSRP) to full effect, all but forcing keen Nintendo gamers to purchase the console at full price and one of the, likely, limited number of launch titles at full list as well. But it does look like there’s a chance we might see two Switch 2 packages go up for pre-order as early as April – one that just includes the console itself and one that bundles in Mario Kart 9 with an up-charge.
Everything we know about Nintendo Switch 2: Mario Kart 9, Mouse-Con functionality, release window, pre-orders, more
Okay, so, $449 for the base console would be a $150 hike on the existing standard edition and a $100 jump by comparison to the current MSRP on the Switch 1 OLED edition. That’s not an outrageous price hike, but it is quite a significant if you ask me.
Another industry analyst suggests the price of the new Nintendo Switch 2 could be something closer to $399 – this might yield a price tag at $449 for the Mario Kart 9 bundle if there is indeed a bundle option landing at launch and would likely be a good balance between overall value and remaining competitive with the PC handheld market and the other consoles (does Nintendo actual compete with the other guys though? Perhaps to some degree, but Mario and friends are still Mario and friends aren’t they?)
The $399 price point as been suggested by industry folks to be the sweet spot for the console, and it is very much the price I guessed it would launch at. But l guess we all just have to hope that my prediction is correct at this point.
This also brings to mind one of the other questions still remaining for the new Nintendo console – does Switch 2 have an OLED display or just a regular LCD? Well, we don’t know yet, and I guess the two rumored prices there could suggest a standard LCD model and premium OLED variant, but that doesn’t seem likely at this point.
Either way, it won’t be all that much longer now and, in the meantime, you can scope out our feature piece detailing everything else we know about Nintendo Switch 2?
