The internet was my higher power: I felt nothing listening to music
At the age of 17, Jenna (now 26) was kicked out of her house by her stepfather. Growing up she was surrounded by heroin addiction and she saw her eviction as a chance to begin again. By the age of 18 she was living with her boyfriend, showering maybe twice a week at best and spending at least 14 hours a day gaming, “doomscrolling” and mindlessly surfing the internet. Long stints sitting at the computer meant she had developed sciatica in her hip and corneal hypoxia in her eyes from sustained contact lens use. Her moods were erratic; her emotions deregulated and unpredictable.
“If I needed food or water I would keep putting
