Hollow Knight: Silksong fans finally get a glimpse of the long-awaited sequel during the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. It sparked rumors that the game might be console-exclusive. While it is confirmed that the game will be released on Nintendo’s next-gen system in 2025, questions continue to linger about whether it will even land on other platforms. Here is what we all know and what is still up in the air.
Is the Hollow Knight Silksong console exclusive?
Despite the game’s spotlight, during the Switch 2 showcase, Hollow Knight: Silksong will not be console-exclusive. Matthew Griffin, the marketing lead of Team Cherry, clarified on X that the game is coming to both the original Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, right alongside PlayStation, PC, and Xbox. It puts the fears to rest that the sequel will remain locked to the new Nintendo hardware.
The confusion started to steam up from the appearance of the game in Switch 2 Direct, which was focused heavily on the next-gen titles. But the confirmation of Griffin reassures the fans that Silksong is accessible across multiple platforms, just like the game’s predecessor.
Why did the support of Nintendo matter?
For Team Cherry, since the launch (2018) of the original Hollow Knight, Nintendo has been a key ally. In the resurfaced interview (2018), the developers praised the hands-off approach by Nintendo, which made the game porting “super nice to play” on a hybrid console. The partnership quite likely explains why exactly Silksong featured in the Direct prominently—but it does not imply exclusivity.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version might leverage the rumored power boost of the console for smoother performance or higher resolutions. Yet, the core design of the game—Metroidvania gameplay and the hand-drawn visuals— will not need cutting-edge hardware. It will ensure it runs perfectly on the original Switch.
When will Hollow Knight Silksong be released?
As of now, Silksong’s 2025 launch window is vague. There is no specific date available yet. The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated to be released in June 2025, but Silksong can drop either earlier or later this year. Notably, Xbox has listed the game in the recent indie showcase. It hints at the simultaneous launch— multiplatform.
The frustration over the delays plagued Silksong since the reveal of the game in 2019. However, the team has insisted that the development is in progress. In the Direct, there was also a brief gameplay snippet—showing Hornet and enigmatic Lace battling—suggesting the core experience to stay true to the original game while fresh locales like the revamped city of Bellhart come in.
The multiplatform release of Silksong is a win for the players. However, the real challenge is to survive the hype until 2025. Whether you are team PlayStation, Switch, or PC, one thing is certain: the launch day will not be soon enough.
