Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming has received communication from a U.S. retailer with more information. According to the seller, the Switch 2 release date is June, with pre-orders starting on April 9th.
Henderson has proven to be a reliable source, but buyers should still exercise caution. Just before the March 27th Nintendo Switch Direct, a Best Buy Canada blog listed an April 2nd Switch 2 pre-order date. The store removed the article, and other sources disputed the prediction. Nintendo waiting a week isn’t the end of the world for gamers. Still, viewers could reserve the original Switch immediately after the 2017 Direct.
The other bullet point from the Insider Gaming article is the June Switch 2 release date. The projection aligns with leaks suggesting an early summer debut. However, more alarming is Henderson’s source predicting limited stock quantities. Nintendo plans to measure interest in the console after the April 2nd Direct and adjust production levels accordingly. Still, based on the reaction to the January reveal, it’s hard to imagine lower-than-anticipated demand. Despite Nintendo’s best efforts, shortages may be inevitable.
An April 9th date would also allow retailers to further capitalize on the hype surrounding the new console. Insider Gaming mentions a countdown clock that will end precisely when Switch 2 pre-orders begin. Also, buyers who claim a system will earn a collectible coin.
There are more unanswered questions about the Switch 2 besides release and pre-order dates. The recent Nintendo Direct focused on current-gen games but produced some Switch 2 leaks. Promotional materials showed the hotly debated C button on the console’s right joy con. In addition, disclaimers about Virtual Game Cards referred to upgraded Switch 2 Edition titles, which may require an additional purchase.
