The Switch 2 Direct may not be the only official Nintendo event in the next few weeks. Several journalists and insiders are dropping hints about announcements this week. Gamers didn’t expect Switch news, but Nintendo’s partners reportedly have many unannounced games.

With the focus on Switch 2 news, some owners of the existing Nintendo console have felt neglected. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition has revived an otherwise light release schedule. However, there are more rumblings of an event before the April 2nd Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Andy Robinson, the Video Games Chronicles Editor-in-Chief, set off speculation with a reply on BlueSky.

Readers shouldn’t jump to conclusions over Robinson’s reaction to a quoted post.  Gaming enthusiast Stealth40k argued that Nintendo made a wise decision to postpone any showcases until after the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. In response, Robinson posted a mysterious-looking, confused emoji. While vague, other sources also tease an announcement or event this week.

On Famiboards, ninspider, suggested that a Nintendo Direct could happen this week. The poster gained attention after previously sharing a crude drawings of the Switch 2 and its dock. Also, a Chinese leaker who revealed details of the June 2024 Direct made a similar proclamation. Finally, gaming reporter Jeff Grubb didn’t promise an event. Still, he explained that Nintendo’s partners had many unannounced Switch games.

An impending Switch Direct focused entirely on Nintendo’s current console seems unlikely. Despite predictions of a February showcase, no event materialized. Even so, popular theories revolve around an Indie World Showcase or Partner Showcase this week instead. Nintendo’s official channels stream these events, but they concentrate on third-party games.

Other possibilities are teasers for the official Switch 2 news to follow. Either way, the backwards compatibility of the upcoming console should benefit gamers. If the Switch 2 release date isn’t until summer, Nintendo fans may have to wait several more months. As Grubb detailed, a series of new Switch games could debut before the anticipated new console arrives.
