Solid build quality
Good looking design
When it comes to displays, LG has been quite a stalwart in the business. The company is among the best and biggest display makers in the market. Be it televisions, smartphones or even computer monitors, LG displays can be found everywhere. LG, in fact, has its own range of monitors as well that are targetted at a wider audience such as professionals, content creators and most importantly gamers.
One such monitor is the LG Ultragear 27GN950. Keeping other audiences aside for a while, let’s take a tour of what a gamer really needs in their desktop monitor.
High resolution, good refresh rate, faster response time, AMD FreeSync and G Sync support and a couple of other features like ports, etc.
Now, a high refresh rate is good, but that takes a shot on frame rate and to deliver a good frame rate you would probably need a top tier graphics card to drive all that pixel at about 100 fps constantly.
LG has taken all the basic needs of a gamer and packed it inside the LG Ultragear 27GN950. It has got 4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, Nvidia G Sync support, AMD FreeSync Premium Pro support, DisplayHDR 600, VESA and many more.
Whether LG’s gaming monitor is capable enough to handle almost anything and everything. Or, is it just another gaming monitor that offers everything at least on paper. Let’s find out.
LG Ultragear 27GN950 monitor: Display, features and performance
Imagine packing everything inside a suitcase that’s not meant for taking that sort of load. It can burst at the seams, right? There’s something similar going on with LG’s Ultragear monitor. For starters, the panel is good, bright and vivid. Colour accuracy is among the best, thanks to a wider colour gamut support. Viewing angles are good too.
This is among the fastest and most responsive IPS panels available in the market. Also, the 98% colour gamut coverage makes this display good for almost anything. Be it gaming or content creation.
Also, the Display Stream Compression (DSC) ensures that the monitor delivers the promised 144Hz frame rate even at its native 4K resolution.
Not to forget, the monitor also comes with support for Nvidia G Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. Whether you are rocking any graphics card, the LG 27GN950 has got you covered from image tearing.
LG colour calibration is really good and it’s a heck of a panel. The sharpness, back levels, whites and contrast is spot on. Turn on the monitor and start a game that supports HDR, high refresh rate and everything else related to a display and you will realize how good the display quality is. For sure you will need a powerhouse to turn on all those features to get to the full potential of the display. But, if you need it, it’s there.
Not everything is hunky and dory though. There’s a major shortcoming that might turn you away from LG 27GN950. The display supports HDR and it also comes with local dimming and it has VESA Display HDR certification as well. But the 16 edge-lit zones only left wanting for more from this panel. That also resulted in not so good HDR viewing experience.
Another drawback and it’s a big one — lack of HDMI 2.1 support. The missing support for newer and better HDMI versions limits this monitor’s ability to run at 60fps with 4K resolution. This won’t matter to you if you are a PC gamer and planning to connect the monitor via DisplayPort. However, if you are a laptop gamer or console gamer and looking to use it for gaming. That would be a bad idea.
The LG 27GN950 has no shortage of ports. It has got two USB Type-A ports, two DisplayPorts and HDMI ports. We would have loved to see a USB Type-C port here.
It also comes with RGB Sphere Lighting 2.0 which offers two modes — Audio Sync and Video Sync. Both modes worked just fine.
Apart from this, the monitor also comes with some extra software. Well, two to be exact. We wished LG could have clubbed them together to offer a complete experience from one place.
LG Ultragear 27GN950 monitor: Design
This is a good looking monitor and features slim bezels on all sides. The stand is well-weighted and does a good job of keeping the entire setup in place. The stand also comes with a wire hook which is a really nice touch and keeps the surrounding clutter-free from cables.
We also liked the fact that adjusting the angle, tile or rotate is really smooth and we have no complaints there. It is also important to mention that the monitor does not come with a built-in speaker.
LG Ultragear 27GN950 monitor: Verdict
The LG Ultragear 27GN950 monitor is a complicated monitor to define. However, LG has packed plenty in it to make the price tag of Rs 59,990 justifiable.
We have to admit that LG has done, at least, the basics right with the monitor. The monitor delivers appealing visuals with good frame rates and 4K resolution.
If you are out there for a good gaming monitor that does not disappoint, then LG Ultragear 27GB950 is a good option to go with.
