It’s been GPU heaven over the last month or so with the NVIDIA RTX 50 series cards all dropping starting with the 5090 and ending with the 5070 and I’ve been using the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Gaming Trio for the last few weeks.

Fresh off reviewing the flagship MSI 5070 Ti Vanguard, definitely follows similar design principles. Whilst it’s still a big card, it’s not quite as chunky coming in at 338 x 140 x 50 mm. Whilst a step down in size from many of the GPUs of past generations, it’s still quite a lot bigger than the 5070 FE (which we don’t have here), so again, just something to note if you’re running a Mini ITX build.

Just like the Vanguard, it feels like an extremely solid and well-built GPU with the MSI dragon on top. The GPU features a copper baseplate and a metal backplate. It has a similar amount of RGB with the MSI logo on the side of the GPU and lit up stripes underneath the GPU which provides a nice projection in the case.

Whilst gaming on the Gaming Trio 5070, it was incredibly quiet at all times and kept to an average temperature in the high 50s. This is thanks to the TRI FROZR 4 Thermal Design as well as the STORMFORCE fans and a great amount of ventilation all over the GPU which does a great job of blowing heat away.

THE CHEAPEST PRICE: $1,349 FROM MWAVE

Onto the performance, the 5070 is in a tougher spot this time around with some pretty fierce competition from AMD, but I still feel that DLSS 4 and NVIDIA’s hugely wide compatibility across a load of games alongside Multi Frame Generation still make the 5070 a great buy, especially for those happy with 1440p and whilst FSR has come a long way, it’s just not as widely supported and still has ways to go.

When it comes to the equipment I used to test, Mwave were kind enough to provide me with an extremely sexy case that perfectly matched the 5070.

It’s this Antec case HERE (or full PC range HERE) and includes the below:

Unlike my 5080 and 5070 Ti reviews, I really only tested the 5070 with Multi Frame Generation (MFG) running at 1440p just due to the base amount of frames without it, but still got the full improvements of DLSS 4 including the new Transformer model (which are also available on older RTX GPUs).

Starting with 1440 gameplay, MFG still can make a meaningful difference. FG is such a big deal is because 3 out of 4 frames (if you’re using MFG 4x) is rendered by NVIDIA’s latest transformer model, so you’re able to literally double or triple performance in some instances without a conceivable loss in graphical quality and even more clarity in some instances.

RTX 5070 1440p MULTI FRAME GEN PERFORMANCE

Maximum Settings / DLSS: Quality

  • Cyberpunk 2077 –  154
  • Hogwarts – 272
  • Alan Wake 2 – 170
  • Star Wars Outlaws –  214 FPS
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard – 284 FPS

At 1440p, Multi Frame Gen really does wonders, it means you can get past 150 FPS with everything cranked all the way up whilst playing the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 with full ray-tracing turned on. When it comes to Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Star Wars Outlaws and Hogwarts Legacy you can expect to get well above the 200 FPS mark, which is pretty impressive with MFG running extremely well.

RTX 5070 1440p DLSS PERFORMANCE (NO MULTI FRAME GEN)

Maximum Settings / DLSS: Balanced

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered – 155 FPS
  • Returnal – 99 FPS
  • Cyberpunk 2077 – 84 FPS
  • Star Wars Outlaws 116 FPS
  • Alan Wake 2 – 96 FPS
  • Spider-Man Miles Morales – 136 FPS
  • Black Myth: Wukong – 76 FPS

Without Multi Frame Gen, it’s still the Gaming Trio 5070 still performs really well at 1440p. You can expect to still get over 60 FPS with Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth Wukong using just DLSS, Returnal which is a game that has struggled for me on a lot of hardware ran really smoothly at nearly 100 FPS and Star Wars Outlaws, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and Spider-Man Miles Morales were all well above the 100 FPS mark.

RTX 5070 4K DLSS PERFORMANCE (NO MULTI FRAME GEN)

Maximum Settings / DLSS: Balanced

The 5070 obviously would have benefitted more from having 16GB of VRAM and I do understand the disappointment with this when it comes to 4K gaming. It’s not too bad as the most entry level 50-series card available, but given this was touted as outperforming the 4090, it’s obviously not that when you make the move to 4K, when MFG just isn’t going to be sustainable for a lot of games due to that low base FPS.

  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered – 93 FPS
  • Returnal – 57 FPS
  • Cyberpunk 2077 – 44 FPS
  • Hogwarts Legacy – 91  FPS
  • Star Wars Outlaws – 62 FPS
  • Alan Wake 2 – 61 FPS
  • Spider-Man Miles Morales – 101 FPS
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard – 101 FPS
  • Black Myth: Wukong – 64 FPS

5070 Gaming Trio REview

Just like the RTX 4070 Super, the 5070 can absolutely play games at 4K and still look absolutely brilliantly, but the more high-end games such as Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk 2077 and Black Myth: Wukong were only just able to achieve 60 FPS with DLSS on, but for games such as Hogwarts Legacy, Dragon Age: The Veilguard and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, achieving nearly 100 FPS performance with DLSS so it’s still a really solid performer.

Being in the room for the 50-series reveal at CES, obviously there was a huge applause when the 5070 was shown on screen with its price tag and touted as having 4090 performance. Everyone knew the circumstances around that, and not so shockingly, the performance in most cases obviously isn’t at that level, but for 1440p gaming with MFG, the 5070 can absolutely hold its own, and will be a great buy when the price drops a little.

Conclusion

Despite more competition than ever, the MSI GeForce RTX 5070 Gaming Trio is still a great entry level GPU for a lot of gamers. It’s extremely capable of 1440p gaming at high frame rates, and for those that aren’t fussed about frame rates beyond 60 FPS, fairly capable at 4K too.
