Obsidian Entertainment has a strong track record with hits like Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and The Outer Worlds. Their latest title, Avowed, has been available in Advanced Access since February 13, transporting players to the vibrant island kingdom of the Land of the Living. As an envoy from Aedyr, they must uncover the truth behind a mysterious plague threatening the realm and its people.
Action-packed battles
Avowed offers a flexible and varied combat system, allowing players to mix weapon types like swords, bows and axes with elemental magic to create a unique fighting style. Different attack types add to the dynamic feel of combat – power attacks, for example, deal more damage and break enemy blocks but are slower. True to Western RPG traditions, the game follows in the footsteps of The Elder Scrolls and Fallout with a first-person perspective. While a third-person option is available, it may feel somewhat stiff.
Release on February 18
Avowed has been available in Advanced Access since February 13 and has already received 538 Steam reviews, with 82% positive. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 80 based on 60 reviews, though the user score is yet to be determined. Praise has focused on its engaging combat and vibrant world, while some critics have pointed out technical issues like bugs and crashes that can impact the experience. As of now, Avowed ranks first in SteamDB’s “Trending Games” category.
The full release of Avowed is set for February 18, with the standard edition priced at $69.99 on Steam. Those who don’t want to wait can choose the Premium Edition for $89.99, which includes two skin packs, a digital artbook, the soundtrack and Advanced Access.
As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart – in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I’m not sitting at my computer, I’m probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life – namely sitting for long periods – at the local swimming pool.
