Astral Chain is getting review bombed on Metacritic for what appears to be a pretty dumb reason.

The latest action-adventure game to come out of PlatinumGames, Astral Chain takes players on a different journey. While there’s still plenty of hack-and-slash action, players assume the role of a special forces police officer investigating crimes with the help of astral familiars. Which, yeah, sounds like a PlatinumGames joint.

With Nier: Automata lead designer Takahisa Taura at the helm and Devil May Cry and Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya looking over his shoulder, it was pretty much a guarantee that Astral Chain would be a hit. And for most critics it is, with an average review score of 87 over on Metacritic.

However, something strange is going on with Astral Chain. The user score is vastly lower than the critic score, with an average user review of 6.2 out of 10.

So what gives? We’re not really sure. It seems like a lot of the most recent negative reviews take aim at Astral Chain‘s cel-shaded graphics, 30 FPS frame rate, and jerky combat system.

But a lot of the reviews that arrived just after the game’s release on August 30th seem to merely complain that Astral Chain is a Nintendo Switch exclusive.

It seems that 2019 is the year where gamers have finally had enough of exclusives. Epic Games is under intense fire for their policy of acquiring exclusive releases, and it seems some of that ire has bled over to exclusive titles released on other systems.

What’s strange is that Nintendo is known for their exclusive franchises, but there hasn’t been a similar review bomb of neither Super Smash Bros nor The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It seems that since PlatinumGames was seen as a PC developer with the release of Nier: Automata that those same fans are now angry with Platinum for not releasing Astral Chain on other systems.

Or something else might be going on. Fire Emblem: Three Houses, another Nintendo exclusive title, is also getting review bombed on Metacritic. Fire Emblem has long been a Nintendo-only franchise, so we can’t imagine what that game did to draw so much hate.
