Around five years ago, the PlayStation 5 was launched. At the time of writing, the company has not shared any details regarding the PlayStation 6. However, a new report hints at the release timeline of the next-gen console.
Shuhei Yoshida is an ex-Sony executive who spent 38 years at the company. After leaving his job in January 2025, he gave an interview to GamesBeat.
During the interview, he was questioned regarding console cycles. With console generations lasting longer, the former Sony executive believes that the PlayStation 6 is likely to launch in 2028. Moreover, Xbox is rumored to launch its next-gen console in 2028, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Sony targets a similar launch timeframe for the PlayStation 6.
“If the next PlayStation comes out in 2028, that feels right to me. Microsoft had their leak about a 2028 plan. Maybe both of them will come out then.” – Shuhei Yoshida
The original PlayStation was succeeded by PS2 just after five years. However, the trend has changed, with console generations now lasting around 6 to 7 years. For example, the PS3 launched in 2006 was succeeded by the PS4 seven years later in 2013. Hence, it is likely that the company will stick to a 6-7 year console cycle for the PS6.
A previous leak suggests that the PlayStation 6’s chip design is complete to enter the manufacturing phase. Moreover, it is said that Sony is working on two different SoCs for the PS6. This may indicate that Sony is working on two versions of the console similar to Xbox Series X and Series S.
