PlayStation quietly releases free download you don't need PS Plus for

It’s a work of art

Horror fans have a little something to get excited about, and it’s not the reveal of Resident Evil 9, but a retro-style brawler that links to one of the biggest horror film franchises at the moment.

PlayStation currently has a free demo of Terrifier: The ARTcade Game available to download, and you don’t need PlayStation Plus to dig into this one.

As a horror film fiend, and huge fan of the Terrifier franchise, this game has been on my radar since it was first announced.

It’s a side-scroller that emulates the feeling of retro beat-em-ups like Double Dragon or Streets of Rage, but with all the gore and brutality turned up to 11.

Thank God for the pixel graphics, otherwise this one would be banned before it even got going, knowing the despicable stuff Art the Clown gets up to.

Up to four people can play Terrifier: The ARTcade Game in multiplayer mayhem, with several of the film’s characters appearing alongside Art himself, to mutilate and murder seemingly everyone they come across.

PlayStation is giving you a chance to try out the game for free before the release later this year, and you’ll get your hands on a plethora of weapons “from chainsaws to cleavers, pick up a variety of weapons to turn your enemies into bloody pulp.”

Featuring “over the top” finishers, I can imagine things are going to get very gory, with blood spattering everything around you as you rampage through the streets.

With multiple ways to play, via six unique game modes, there should be plenty of life in this horror game designed to gross you out in as many ways as possible.

Games were definitely not like this in the 1990s, but the developers are doing everything they can to make this title feel as retro as possible, including a chiptune soundtrack to keep the blood pumping.
