PlayStation 4 fans, rejoice – it looks like you could be getting your own version of the EA subscription service that Microsoft and Xbox has had for the better part of five years now.
During the publishing and development company’s latest earnings call, EA management noted: “In the year ahead we plan to offer a subscription service on another major platform.”
Nothing further was announced, but considering the service has been live on Xbox One since 2014 and on PC since 2016 (under the name Origin Access), it’s realistic to think that the PlayStation 4 is the next ‘major platform’ the service could launch on.
Considering EA has so far been reluctant to support the Nintendo Switch to the extent other publishers have (Bethesda, Ubisoft, 2K and Square Enix to name just a few), so we doubt it will launch a subscription catalogue of games for the plucky little handheld… meaning that Sony’s PS4 is really the only option we have.
Sony has previously made comments about the service suggesting it offers poor value for money though… so whether Sony and EA have come to some sort of agreement in 2019 remains to be seen.
PushSquare asked EA for comment on the matter, but the company noted it has “no further details to share at this point”, and we’re not certain when we’re going to get an update from the company.
If you’re not sure what the service is, EA Access is a video gaming subscription that lets you play EA’s best games as much as you want, exclusively on Xbox One (for now).
Perks of joining include: over 50 games available to play and download, early trials of EA games before they’ve officially released, and a member discount that allows you 10% off EA digital purchases.
Anthem will be one of the games available on the service when it launches in the coming weeks.
