PlayStation September System Software Updates – New PS5, PS4 and Mobile App Features

The PS5 launched in November 2020, but supply problems and a global chip shortage have slowed the production of Sony’s next-generation console to a crawl. New stock is tricky to find, and when it does appear the PS5 sells out in the blink of an eye.

August was one of the best months ever for PS5 restocks, seeing multiple drops at VerySmyths ToysBT and EE, as well as availability at ArgosAmazon and Game. There were around 35 drops in total. This month has already been impressive though, with drops at AO.comAce Studio and ShopTo and Currys PC World all in the first week. We’ve also seen stock at BT and  Smyths Toys, and earlier this week, we had some hefty drops at GameVery and Argos. What’s next?

If you’re still on the lookout for a PS5, you’ve come to the right place. Our liveblog is on hand to give you the latest insight on Playstation 5 restocks from all major UK retailers, both online and in-store, as well as providing details on rumoured releases, the latest PS5 games and accessories to snap up.

And with that, we’re signing off for the evening. Did you managed to bag a PS5 through the Currys PC World VIP code system? Perhaps a PS5 found its way into your local branch of Smyths? If not, then don’t panic. We’ll be back again tomorrow to share everything we can on how to land yourself a PlayStation 5.

Can you get a VPN on the PS5?

(Free VPN Indybest)

Sony doesn’t allow any VPN apps like NordVPN or ExpressVPN to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store – and in fact VPNs aren’t supported on the PS5 platform at all – but there’s still a way to use a VPN on the console if you want to stream geo-restricted content.

We’d recommend using a VPN with the Smart DNS feature. It’s a service provided by a number of VPN firms, including NordVPN, that allows you to spoof your location on devices that don’t have VPN support, like a PS5. You can read our round-up of the best VPNs for more information.

The biggest PS5 games still to come in 2021

(Activision Blizzard)

If you’ve just secured yourself a PS5 – or are still patiently waiting for a restock to land – you’ll want to know what games are coming to the console later in 2021. And the good news is, there’s a lot to get excited about.

This will see the release of Kena: Bridge of Spirits by Ember Lab on 23 September, followed by Kojima Productions’ Death’s Stranding Director’s Cut on 24 September. After that there is Ubisoft’s Far Cry 6 arriving on 7 October, followed by Back 4 Blood on 12 October and EA’s Battlefield 2042 on 22 October.

October is a busy month for OS5 games, and the final days of the month will see Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Solar Ash both land on 26 October, followed by Riders Republic on 28 October.

After that, one of the biggest PS5 games of the year, Call of Duty: Vanguard will arrive on 5 November, just before Skyrim: Anniversary Edition on 11 November.

How to find local PS5 stock at Smyths

(The Independent)

PS5 restocks aren’t just limited to online retailers, and we recommend shoppers regularly check on their local stores for fresh stock. Smyths Toys has a useful online tool for this, where you can search for PS5 stock at every one of the retailer’s UK stores.

Sure, you might not want to drive the length of the country to bag yourself a PS5, but if a pre-ordered console goes unsold at a local store, the Smyths website will tell you.

We’ve just checked and the website shows no PS5 stock at any Smyths shop, but don’t lose hope because consoles do get added sporadically throughout the day.

Pre-ordered consoles arrive at Smyths Toys

Good news for anyone who successfully ordered a PlayStation 5 during the most recent restock on 8 September – your console is ready for collection.

We’re hearing that buyers will be contacted by Smyths about collecting their consoles from a local store, starting today.

The 8th was the last PS5 restock seen by Smyths, and came after drops on the 3, 4 and 17 August. We were initially hopeful of a second or even third PS5 restock for Smyths this month, but the website currently says shoppers will have to wait until October.

The best games for your PS5

Congratulations to anyone who managed to buy a PS5 at Game, Very and Argos this week. With the console now winging its way to your door, you’ll want some games to go with it. Thanfully, we’ve got a round-up of the best PS5 games, just for you.

In the bestselling Spider-Man: Miles Morales game (£44.99,, Peter Parker is replaced with his awkward teenage protégé, Miles Morales. A next-generation spin-off, Spider-Man: Miles Morales “refines the original’s formula,” our reviewer said, adding: “This is a streamlined adventure with a more focused story, far less busy work and an endearingly clumsy protagonist still getting to grips with his powers.”

Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls (£57.99, on PS5 is a showcase of what the powerful new console is capable of. “The oppressive gothic architecture, yawning arches and festering dungeons of this cult classic look spectacular on the new hardware, while remaining faultlessly faithful to the aesthetic and vibe of the original game,” our tester said.

When did Smyths Toys last have a PS5 restock?

Smyths Toys might be one of the smaller retailers selling PS5 stock, but it has also been among the most reliable. The store had two PS5 restocks in June, followed by three in August. So far we have seen one restock from Smyths this month, on 8 September.

This leaves plenty of time for another drop to land before the month ends, but Smyths is urging caution and currently states that fresh stock is expected in October. Smyths also says how pre-orders placed during the last drop will be fulfilled by 24 September, so those lucky enough to grab a PS5 then shouldn’t have too much longer to wait.

Currys PC World sends out new VIP codes

Currys PC World has just sent out a fresh batch of VIP codes to those already registered via email. Codes have to be redeemed in-store and by no later than 21st September.

If you aren’t aware, Currys used to run a VIP pass draw, allowing people to register to be in with the chance of buying a PlayStation 5, but it closed in early June to new entrants. The retailer is still getting through those who registered. So check your inbox and junk folder, you may be one of the chosen ones!

These codes are for the PS5 disc edition, not the digital edition.
