NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University women’s basketball team fell to Southern New Hampshire University, 82-73 at Moore Field House. The Owls fall to 7-9 overall and 1-7 in the Northeast 10, while the Penmen improve to 10-6 overall and 3-5 in the NE10.

Senior Imani Wheeler (Dumfries, Va.) had a game-high 18 points, six assists and two steals, while shooting 8-for-14 from the field. Redshirt junior Jessica Fressle (Levittown, N.Y.) tallied 17 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Amani Boston (Dorcester, Mass.) collected 14 points and five assists shooting 6-for-13 from the field, while redshirt freshman Alexa Kellner (Stamford, Conn.) tallied 12 points and nine rebounds, shooting 4-for-9 from the field.

How It Happened

  • After the Southern Connecticut recorded the first points of the game, Southern New Hampshire responded with an 11-2 run over a three-minute span. The Owls increased their offense with a 7-2 run to tie the game. The remainder of the quarter saw the Penmen narrowly outscore the Owls 10-8, which gave them a four-point lead at the end of the first.
  • After Southern New Hampshire increased their lead to 25-21 with 7:49 remaining, the Owls went on a 9-2 run to take a 30-27 lead. Southern New Hampshire would end the half on a 15-6 run to take a 42-36 lead into the locker room. 
  • To begin the third quarter, the Owls went on a 14-8 run to tie the game at 50 with 4:39 remaining. Southern New Hampshire outscored the Owls 14-4 over the last 4:30 minutes to take a 64-54 lead at the end of the quarter. 
  • Southern Connecticut would battle back to cut Southern New Hampshire’s lead to 64-63, as Kellner went on a personal 9-0 run on the strength of three three-pointers. The Owls would again cut the lead down to a single possession, as Southern New Hampshire led 69-67 with 3:21 remaining, but Southern New Hampshire went on a 13-6 run to finish the game.

  • Imani Wheeler has recorded double-digit points in four of her last five games and has tallied four or more assists in four-straight games. 
  • In her last four games, Wheeler has shot 55% from three-point range and averages 16.0 points per game. 
  • Alexa Kellner’s nine rebounds tied a career-high that she previously set on Dec. 14, 2019 against Chestnut Hill. 
  • Kellner has registered double-digit points in two of her last three games. 
  • Southern Connecticut’s 73 points were the second highest point total scored this season. Their highest came against Bloomfield on Nov. 10, 2019 when they scored 100.
