Future Nintendo Switch 2 owners might be able to equip their handheld with a smartphone as a second display, as a new patent for a corresponding magnetic mount has been filed. This could allow the Japanese gaming behemoth to revive games that were originally released for the Nintendo DS or Wii U.

The successor to the original Nintendo Switch (from $299 on Amazon) will probably hit the market in the next few months, as Nintendo released an official announcement trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 back in January. However, most details regarding the technical specifications, games and the console’s launch date are expected to be confirmed by early April.

Nevertheless, GameRant has already discovered a new patent in which Nintendo describes an interesting accessory for its next-generation hybrid console: a smartphone holder. This mount can accommodate a smartphone with a rotatable magnetic arm, which means that the phone can be used in portrait or landscape mode. That said, the patent doesn’t specify how the smartphone will be used alongside the main screen of the Nintendo Switch 2.

A smartphone as a second display could arguably open up some interesting new possibilities, such as displaying Nintendo DS games. This would allow Nintendo to expand the Virtual Console with games for the popular gaming handheld from 2004. Wii U titles that relied on a controller with an integrated display could be played this way.

Alternatively, the smartphone could simply be used for voice chats, manuals or game companion apps. The patent also describes the option to use the smartphone holder as a stand for the console. As usual, there’s no guarantee that the accessory detailed in this patent will ever be released for the Switch 2 or another upcoming Nintendo console.
