The anticipation is no doubt high for Private Division’s and Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds ahead of its October 25 release on all major platforms. If everything goes well, we will definitely be looking at a sequel, where we can play it, however, remains a toss-up.
According to Xbox Studios head, Matt Booty, in an interview with Game Informer, Microsoft believes The Outer Worlds has the potential to become “an enduring franchise.” With Microsoft’s acquisition of Obsidian in 2018, they could look to lock down any potential sequel.
The Outer Worlds is currently being published by Private Division, Take-Two’s indie-centric publishing arm. However, for future titles, Microsoft will likely be handling publishing duties themselves, which will de facto make them Microsoft exclusives.
This is not the case for all of the first-party titles, with Minecraft famously being the exception. It makes total sense to keep the Minecraft franchise as open and multi-platform as possible. Other games, though, will be better off with Microsoft’s help and resources, and The Outer Worlds is one such title with its huge potential.
I think that it’s a great universe they’ve created. And I think about what are the things that you need for a franchise to kind of bear weight? Like what can it withstand? Is it a narrative, is it a set of characters, is it a universe that’s big enough that you could start to add onto it?”
Hopefully, come this October will be an interstellar adventure that lives up to the hype despite development being “crunch-free”. Perhaps then would be the time to consider investing in other platforms.
