A new project from WB Games could start as early as 2025. A LinkedIn post about the unannounced game includes an update from a Game Design Lead at WB Games Boston. His profile says that he’s working at WB Games, and his job description is “Manager of Game Design for a new unannounced IP game, launching in 2025”. The profile, however, was deleted when this news went viral yesterday.
This WB Games Boston employee said to be in charge of many important parts of the game, such as the story, quests, player customization, and the first-time user experience. However, the phrase “new unannounced IP game” has led to a lot of different interpretations, leading people to wonder if the project is a completely new idea or a new installment in an existing series.
The wording has led to two different theories. Some people think the title might be based on a WB property, like DC Comics, Harry Potter, or The Lord of the Rings. The other theory is that it’s a completely new IP. Fans have seen fewer of these kinds of movies from WB lately since the company usually makes franchise-based movies.
The company hasn’t been known to invest heavily in original IPs in the past, so a new game set in a known universe may be more likely. However, the word “IP” in the job description does leave the door open for something completely different.
It’s also being thought about whether this unannounced game could be the LEGO game that reporter Jason Schreier said is being made and could come out in late 2025 or early 2026. On the other hand, TT Games usually makes LEGO games, and this developer works at WB Games Boston, not TT.
Still, the developer may be working on a project for a different studio. WB Games is known for working with other studios. As an example, Rocksteady helped make Hogwarts Legacy, and WB Montréal is said to have been helping Monolith with the Wonder Woman game. It’s harder to figure out who is really in charge of development when there is this kind of internal support.
WB Games Boston has been hidden for a long time. The studio hasn’t released a game since its rebranding in 2018. It used to be known for mobile games like Batman: Arkham Underworld (2016) and Game of Thrones: Conquest (2017). Since they’ve mostly worked on Live-service and mobile projects in the past, the idea that they could make a full-on console or PC game is strange but not impossible.
Studios have changed direction before and done it well. Bend Studio made Uncharted: Golden Abyss for the PlayStation Vita and then released Days Gone on PS4 after remaking the game several times. WB Games Boston might be going through a similar change.
There is also a chance that the new game will still be a mobile game. If that’s the case, fans who were hoping for an AAA experience might be let down. Mobile games make a lot of money and are an important part of the industry, but gamers aren’t usually as excited about new mobile games, especially if early rumors point to something bigger.
As long as the launch date in 2025 is correct, there will probably be an official announcement in the next few months. An announcement for a major release that comes out in the fall is more likely to happen between spring and summer. We should soon know more about it, whether it’s a new IP, part of an existing franchise, or a mobile project. Until then, fans will have to use job postings and developer profiles to piece together clues.
