Yesterday, when I was watching Tomas Hertl score for the Vegas Golden Knights, I also had my eyes glued to a mobile app game. The name (Rhymes Like Dimes!)? It was called Vita Mahjong, another take on the tile-based game from China.

The goal is to match tiles until there aren’t any left on the board. The only problem? They’re stacked on top of each other, complicating the mission further. How will you beat the game when you have other tiles stacked on top of each other?

But that goes back to a broader point about mobile apps. There are so many in existence, with many of them having terrible commercials. I mean, how are you selling me on the game if your character dies and sucks at the game? I’m tired of seeing Jimmy Garoppolo die in a game called Hero Wars.

There are ads for games where you’re farming and selling eggs and chickens (imagine getting your hands on a dozen eggs at this time). There’s also one where you’re running a hotel and fixing toilets for customers. There’s even one where you’re merging fruit, trying to eliminate watermelons on the board.

However, the Golden Knights have a game on their mobile app themselves. No, it isn’t the disastrous Knighttime+ app, where you’re guessing when the Golden Knights game turns back on. Instead, it’s similar to the popular game, Wordle. The only difference? It has a Vegas twist.

Play Golden Guess on the Vegas Golden Knights app

Most mobile app games share some common themes. First, they have numerous in-app purchases that get you hooked on the game. Want to get rid of those pesky ads? Go ad-free for $7.99. Perhaps you want a bundle pack to get you past the next level? $14.99 for more power-ups.

Second, their ads do one of two things. First, they showcase how bad the developers are at playing their own game. Two, they let you play the game, giving you a tiny sample before taking you to the app store to buy the game (that’s how they get you). Either way, you see how the game functions so it piques your interest.

Finally, they all have positively-pleasing sounds when you collect something. No, it’s not in an ASMR sense. But it’s an upbeat “BLING!” that’s a sign towards progress… and wasted time.

Still, the Vegas Golden Knights have a different game that doesn’t have Jimmy Garoppolo dying, aesthetically pleasing sounds, or in-app purchases. Instead, they have a game similar to Wordle. It’s called Golden Guess and you can guess various five-letter words until you get the answer right. Do remember that like Wordle, you’re limited to six guesses.

You’re also limited to one word a day. I don’t know how much success you’ll have with putting Tomas Hertl in the box. But putting Stone in won’t be a problem. The best part? The game is free to use. You don’t need to make in-app purchases to play another game. Sure, you only get one word. But you know some big wig not named Bill Foley is planning something fishy with the word game.

By the way, today’s word starts with an “E”. That’s the only hint you’re getting from here.
