What’s Among Us again?
Among Us is a multiplayer, mobile game where players work to complete tasks on a starship. However, one of the players is an imposter, who sneaks around the ship trying to disrupt the group and kill everyone.
So what’s new?
In a new blog post, the developer said it has tried to upgrade the mystery game’s high increase of players. But it has been slow to release updates because of behind-the-scenes work.
Specifically, the company said it only has four employees, who have had to figure out new ways to work because of the increased popularity of the game.
- “Among Us gained incredible traction pretty late into 2020 that we weren’t expecting, and that meant A LOT of change for us,” the developers said.
- “It’s all behind-the-scenes work, and while it meant time away from the game, it’ll make it easier for current and future us to develop the game better,” Innersloth said.
Among Us popularity
Among Us became a massive hit among young gamers in 2020. In fact, recent numbers from Nielsen’s SuperData found Among Us had about 500 million users in November alone, which is the highest monthly players for a mobile video game ever, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.
- The numbers were higher than those for Pokemon Go and Candy Crush Saga, according to The Verge.
Will there be a sequel?
Back in December, the developers of Among Us hinted at a sequel since the current version has been so successful and popular, The Verge reports. But the developers said they canceled the sequel to focus on developing the current version.
- “The main reason we (were) shooting for a sequel is because the codebase of Among Us 1 is so outdated and not built to support adding so much new content,” InnerSloth said in a blog post. “However, seeing how many people are enjoying Among Us 1 really makes us want to be able to support the game and take it to the next level.”
