After nearly a decade of success with Destiny 2, Marathon is set to become Bungie’s next flagship title. April 12 gave players the first glimpse of the gameplay, and the developers shared plenty of important information related to the upcoming release. Along with the launch date, Bungie has clarified about the game’s availability on different platforms. There’s good news for all players, as consoles will be supported along with PC.
Marathon will be available on the Xbox and PS5 console
The upcoming shooter is scheduled to go live on September 23 unless there’s any unforeseen delay. It will be launching simultaneously on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and the PS5. This is confirmed on the official product page for the game, which includes plenty of vital information. This will also mean that console users won’t have to wait longer than the PC players to play the game. It has been a common trend for developers to release a game on PC before adding a console version. In fact, Steam has an entire “early access” section that includes games going through a test phase, and most of them don’t have a port available for consoles.
Will Marathon release on Xbox One and PS4?
It’s highly unlikely that Bungie will release their upcoming title on the older-gen consoles. The product page makes it pretty clear that only Xbox Series X|S and PS5 will be included in the launch plans (aside from PC). There are no mentions of either the Xbox One or the PS4. It’s pretty certain that Bungie is going to take a generational leap and skip the older generation altogether.
Incidentally, there’s no support for the Nintendo Switch, or mention of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. There’s a chance that Bungie could release a Switch 2 port down the line, but that seems highly unlikely at this point. As of writing, the only platforms of the game will be PC, Xbox Series X|S and the PS5. Players can get an early teaste of things to come as part of the upcoming closed alpha test. The test will be exclusively available in North America, and it will begin from April 23.
