Millions of video gamers have grown up with PlayStation consoles and countless hours of fun. However, the vast majority of those people, myself included, made a big mistake when it came to naming one of the most recognizable symbols on the DualShock controller. It is the “X” button, which has been the subject of much debate in the community for more than a decade. Is it an X or a cross?
Sony itself finally took matters into its own hands and clarified what many did not know: the “X” on the controller of its consoles is actually a cross, not a letter. The reason for this can be found in geometry itself. A user of the X – formerly Twitter, and in this context somewhat ironically – explained that the difference lies in the very arrangement of the symbol, where a cross maintains the same angles and distances between its bars, while the X has them unequal. The PlayStation UK account itself was responsible for giving its blessing to this explanation via the social network.
This revelation is unlikely to change anyone’s life, but it is causing quite a stir on the Internet. Many people were completely convinced that they were pressing the x button on their remote controls, never considering that it was a simple cross. Will they change the way they refer to it in the future? Probably not, but at least they now have a great fun fact to surprise their family and friends with. It’s perfect for being a nerd!
