Microsoft bringing its titles to other systems might seem to cast doubt on a new Xbox console. Not surprisingly, sales of the Xbox Series X have stalled. However, Windows Central’s Jez Corden recently confirmed that Microsoft is committed to releasing new hardware. While it’s likely years away from a debut, the manufacturer is moving past the preliminary stages of console development.
Xbox consoles aren’t alone in their struggles to attract new owners. Console sales across the industry have been down in the past year, even if Sony isn’t suffering to the same extent. Nintendo Switch purchases are at a low point, but a Switch 2 release is looming. Regardless, with an unmatched selection of titles, PC gaming continues to increase its market share. With support for its current systems waning, Microsoft is relying instead on Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and cross-platform titles.
Even though Microsoft is now dependent on other platforms for revenue, it hasn’t abandoned plans for a new console. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer explained how today’s consoles lack an identity. According to Spencer, current hardware is missing unique features that would make playing a game on a particular system more appealing. While short on details, a new Xbox console would be innovative enough to enhance gameplay in unexpected ways.
It’s also unclear if Jez Corden’s source was referring to the rumored Xbox handheld. With the popularity of mobile and cloud gaming, a hybrid system like the Switch could serve multiple roles. Presumably, a similar Xbox console would thrive in a docked mode like Nintendo’s system or the Steam Deck.
Some insiders have been surprised by Microsoft’s rapid shift away from Xbox exclusives. If plans for a new Xbox console are progressing, the company could quickly change strategies again.
