However, without modifications, the OS can be difficult to navigate using a d-pad and buttons. A Windows 11 preview build could offer a glimpse into how Microsoft addresses this dilemma.
Tipped off by a BlueSky post, Windows Central reported on an interesting reference to “Gaming_GamingPosture_ChooseHomeApp.” The phrasing was found in a language pack for a Windows 11 development build. Users could boot a device in full-screen mode or choose from UIs that likely include new Xbox-style menus. Depending on its execution, the software could optimize an Xbox handheld for gaming.
So far, alternatives like the Asus ROG Ally have struggled to match the user-friendliness of the Steam Deck. With SteamOS, Valve’s handheld makes installing and launching games relatively painless. Instead of searching for titles from a desktop environment, the system is more accommodating to controllers. Even if competitors are more powerful, many gamers prefer the Steam Deck because of its simplicity.
Microsoft has already made subtle changes to Windows and its gaming features. The Game Bar can now shrink to become more accessible on small screens. Additionally, controllers can input search phrases using an on-screen keyboard. Still, these are only small steps toward making Windows handhelds full-fledged gaming consoles. The new Windows 11 preview build would be the first test to see how these tweaks work on a gaming handheld.
