While fans wait for the next installation in the God of War series, the popular PlayStation franchise looks set to get a TV adaptation. The God of War show may still be in pre-production but a new admission by the showrunner may raise concerns among fans of the series.
On an episode of the Sackhoff Show, God of War TV series showrunner Ronald D. Moore, also known for his work on Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek, confirmed that he had never played any of the God of War games, claiming he found the controls cumbersome:
Right now, I’m working on an adaptation of a video game called God of War that Amazon has ordered two seasons of. They’ve asked me to come in so I’m literally in the writer’s room and working on that. That’s my new thing, such a daunting property yeah, I’m not a gamer….I’ve tried, I’m not a gamer.
While it’s easy to empathize with Ron Moore’s struggles with controllers and gaming in general, it does raise the question of how much nuance the God of War show could miss out on with a showrunner who’s admitted to never experiencing the source material the way it was intended to.
On the flip side, though, the podcast does confirm that two seasons of the show have been greenlit, which some could interpret as evidence of Amazon potentially prioritizing the series. At the very least, the God of War show is unlikely to be hamstrung by its budget. The quality of its writing, on the other hand, remains to be seen.
