state of play

Sony streamed a new State of Play this afternoon, totaling 45 minutes and packed with never-before-revealed trailers and announcements. Here are the games that hold the most promise…

Most news outlets probably won’t lead with the octopus game, but we will! Darwin’s Paradox looked pretty fresh and fun. You are a blue octopus. You are abducted by ALIENS. Your task is to thwart their plans for Earth domination by sneaking around their spaceship on all eight legs and sabotaging their equipment. You have special octopus abilities like suction to climb walls, ink projectiles you can shoot, and changing color to camouflage yourself. No specific date on this one but it’s coming in 2025.

Dreams of Another looks pretty darn innovative. It’s a shooter, but unlike any you’ve played before. You wander through dreamscapes in your pajamas, Uzi at your side, but it’s there to create, not destroy. Every object is made up of thousands of particles, thanks to the point cloud rendering technology of the engine, and by shooting things you can manipulate their forms to find solutions and progress through the game. Neat, eh? It’s coming out in 2025.

The Midnight Walk, described as a “dark fantasy adventure,” has a unique visual style that looks like a stop-motion Laika movie. It will be out May 8 on PS5 and it will also be VR2 compatible.

We’re getting a sequel to the action RPG Lies Of P, though in this case it’s more of a prequel. It once again takes place in the city of Krat, but before it went to ruin. This is one of the few games that will also be available on PS4 in case you’re still a generation behind.

Gotta go….you know. This is one game that definitely won’t just be on Playstation 5, but we got a lot of new footage and the reveal that a closed beta test is coming within the month (the 21st of February). Sega is promising the largest roster of characters in any Sonic racing game to date, and the addition of “Travel Rings” that transport racers to different locations mid-race — hence the title, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

Shinobi is back, and better yet, Sega knows better than to mess with the classic gameplay too much. Shinobi: Act Of Vengeance will hit PS5 and other platforms August 28.

Will Borderlands 4 fix the problems people had with Borderlands 3? Will it make everyone forget about that complete trainwreck of a movie? Can Gearbox climb out of this hole or will BL4 be the next shovel? We’ll all find out together.

Developer Housemarque has revealed their follow-up to their hit 2022 title Returnal, called Saros. Not much is known about it at this point, beyond what the trailer suggests: a solar theme and some kind of Hindu deity at its core…but it’s early. “Come Back Stronger” could be hinting at a roguelike. The game won’t be ready until 2026 but it will be enhanced for PS5 Pro.

Finally, it wouldn’t be a State of Play without one lazy “remaster,” so here it is. Wanna plays Days Gone again? You’ll get your chance April 25.
