Ending days of speculation, Nintendo has confirmed a Direct livestream for March 27th. The approximately 30-minute presentation will take place at 7:00 a.m. PST/10:00 a.m. EST on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel. The gaming giant also clarified that the Direct will focus on Switch games rather than the anticipated Switch 2 console.
Many gamers had doubted the timing of a presentation a week before the April 2nd Switch 2 Direct. There were rumors of a February event that ultimately did not materialize. Revealing details about the console’s hardware or launch titles could steal the thunder from the show to follow. However, the March 27th Nintendo Direct will apparently deal with a backlog of unannounced current-gen titles. Sales of the existing Switch have slowed with few new high-profile titles released.
Responding to leaks earlier in the week, gaming reporter Jeff Grubb revealed that many Switch games were still in the works. Even without knowing the precise Switch 2 release date, gamers are likely at least several months away from its debut. In addition to keeping players invested in the Switch ecosystem, the upcoming console will be backward compatible. Most titles released before the Switch 2 debut should work, with the potential for enhancements.
Of course, fans are now speculating about which games will be featured in the March 27th Nintendo Direct. Two of the most anticipated titles are Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Nintendo advertises both games for the Switch, but not yet as Switch 2 titles. Notably, leaker extas1s recently claimed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would not be a part of the April 2nd presentation. Considering the game’s 2017 origins, gamers may hope it pops up on March 27th rather than face a delay.
