Gamers are feeling confused after a new report about Switch 2 dev kits. On a recent Insider Gaming Weekly podcast, Tom Henderson mentioned that some kits issued to developers lack a 4K output. Henderson learned the news at the March Game Developers Conference and through email contacts. However, early dev kits may not reflect the final Switch 2 specs.
Nintendo never announced that its new console would have 4K capabilities. Still, previous Switch 2 leaks speculated that the handheld’s dock would support a 4K signal. It’s unlikely that the console would be powerful enough to render graphics natively at this resolution, especially at 60 fps. Instead, upscaling powered by a form of DLSS would boost visuals from 720p/1080p to 1440p or 4K. Modern consoles like the PS5 are advertised as 4K systems, but most titles don’t run at the setting without upscaling.
Even if the distinction doesn’t significantly impact visual quality, the Switch 2 may lose marketing points. As they have fallen in price, 4K TVs have become commonplace in households. Also, many gamers would prefer that Nintendo focus on games, but the console may never support streaming 4K media.
Concerned buyers should consider the history of Switch dev kits before panicking. Ahead of the 2017 Switch debut, Nintendo reportedly issued several versions of the tools. Earlier iterations were less powerful, and it’s believed different kits existed for handheld and docked modes. Switch 2 specs that don’t include a 4K output also defy a 2023 NateTheHate report about Gamescom. The insider claimed that Nintendo showed The Legend of Zelda: Breath in the Wild on a Switch 2 at 4K/60 fps.
Fans may not have to wait long for Nintendo to confirm which Switch 2 leaks are accurate. The April 2nd Nintendo Direct will hopefully showcase the console’s improved connectivity.
