Plans are underway in Ireland to mark the canonisation of a young gamer affectionately dubbed “the patron saint of PlayStation”.
In the past year, the primary relic of Carlo Acutis, who died from leukaemia back in 2006, has made a number of visits to dioceses in Ireland from Assisi.
Excitement is now mounting as followers of the 15-year-old make plans for canonisation celebrations in Ireland on April 27 of this year.
An organisation known as Carlo Acutis Ireland, formed over a year ago, has been visiting schools and facilities across Ireland to raise awareness of the saint. Formed by Dublin siblings Mary-Aoife Ong (24) and Séamus Ong (22), the group is responsible for the representation of Carlo Acutis in Ireland.
The story of the late teenager’s path to sainthood has captured the imaginations of people across the world. From April, Carlo Acutis will go down in history as the world’s first millennial saint.
Born in 1991, Carlo Acutis was known for his good deeds as well as his avid interest in video games. He also used his tech skills to create a website documenting eucharistic miracles.
He would later become known for his own documented miracles which include the healing of a child named Mattheus from a birth defect known as an annular pancreas.
St Paul’s Church on Arran Quay in Dublin will livestream the canonisation on April 27. This will be accompanied by testimonies from people whose lives have been positively impacted by Carlo Acutis. A full list of events taking place across Ireland to mark the historic day is due to be released in the coming weeks.
Séamus and Mary-Aoife decided to form Carlo Aticus Ireland after visiting the shrine where Carlo’s body now lies in St Mary Major Parish in Assisi. Séamus said they had never before heard of a saint who wore a tracksuit and carried a mobile phone.
The siblings have set up a shrine dedicated to the saint in their home. They have even accommodated requests from people who wish to visit their home to pray there.
“We’ve been hearing a huge amount of different things from people who claim to have experienced physical healing,” Séamus said.
“One person injured her femur bone and was given a six-month recovery time. She was in a wheelchair as she recovered and prayed a lot to Carlo Acutis for healing.
“After just a few weeks she felt the pain in her leg go away and started to walk again. The doctors were shocked at her quick recovery time. She’s feeling very strongly that Carlo has helped heal her leg.”
