Sony has provided a promising update on PlayStation 6 development ahead of its launch. During a call after its latest financial results, Sony CFO Lin Tao revealed details about the PS5’s worldwide sales. Tao also gave a brief but meaningful update on the PS6 console’s status.

Sony said the PS5 sold 2.6 million Units in the last three months. As a result, the console’s install base now sits at 97.9 million worldwide (via Videogames Chronicle).

What has Sony revealed about PlayStation 6 development?

Lin Tao revealed that Sony plans to keep enhancing user engagement and strengthen monetization on the PS5 platform. Regarding PS6, he added, “We also intend to make solid progress in preparing for the next-generation platform.” When asked about how PS6 development is going, Tao said Sony is making “solid progress,” along with revealing it will invest in the platform starting next year.

“For future growth, we have to attach great importance to a new platform and make the necessary investments for that,” he said. “We have to support the soundness of our platform and think about how rationally we can invest in that platform. We will announce that at an appropriate time in the future.”

As for the status of PS5 manufacturing during the ongoing memory crisis, Tao said that Sony has offset price increases by making “adjustments to promotions and pricing, as well as additional cost reductions.”

A recently registered Sony patent suggests the PS6 may let users pay on the PS Store via NFC-enabled controllers. The company recently came under fire for its decision to stop physical disk production for video games starting in 2028. It has also confirmed it will. Sony has not yet officially announced the PlayStation 6, its specifications, price, or release date.
