Saintess of the Golden Bow, a visual novel developed by Transparent Games, tells the story of a young adult office worker reborn into her favorite web novel. In the original novel’s narrative, her character’s death served as the catalyst for the events that unfolded throughout the story and shaped its outcome. However, her actions and will to survive after being reborn in this newfound life altered the course of events in ways she could never have anticipated. Armed with knowledge of the main storyline, she must navigate this unfamiliar path, avoiding the tragic fate and striving to defeat the Demon Queen as the newly chosen Saintess of the Golden Bow.
As a classic otome game, the novel offers a set of romantic interests for the main character. The loyal knight Levi is shy but devoted; the mad prince Noah is possessive and straightforward, while the high priest Elijah is an enigmatic figure. The players will have to choose which route to follow and make decisions carefully for each of them to have a strong impact on the events, leading to one of ten possible endings.
The version of the game I had a chance to try was only a short demo, introducing the prologue to the main story. The setup there seems to be pretty common and contains the popular ‘isekai’ themes; however, there is a twist to it—the novel heroine was reincarnated into a BL (boy love) one. Yes, originally, the death of her character led to the love between the guys who now turned out to be her possible love interests and partners for life. It creates an opportunity for humor and calls for a route where the heroine, as the BL fan, would try to bring the boys together and fix the novel plot, avoiding their tragic deaths, but authors chose a more classic course for the plot.
The story unfolds smoothly and at a brisk pace, told through the heroine’s perspective without overly elaborate or redundant dialogues. At first glance, the narrative may appear generic and cliché, but the writing style and the protagonist’s endearing charm manage to captivate the attention, encouraging you to stay around for a little longer.
It is hard to fully appreciate the depth of the love interests in the demo itself. With limited screen time, they are primarily introduced through brief scenes and a single CG moment per character, which doesn’t provide enough insight into their personalities or the potential dynamics with the heroine. While this tease may pique interest, it leaves much to be explored in the full version.
The novel certainly has its own charm, and despite the art looking slightly amateur, the overall atmosphere of the game feels like a beautiful fairy tale story. Every piece shows that authors love their creation and try hard to do the best they can with everything they’ve got. Initially, the choice to include voiceovers only for CG moments might seem like a limitation, but upon further reflection, this decision was made for a bigger purpose. By reserving voiced scenes for these key moments, the developers add a sense of importance and impact to them, enhancing their emotional weight within the narrative.
For players eager to dive deeper into the world of Saintess of the Golden Bow, the full version promises an affection system that will challenge them to make strategic choices, unlocking special CG scenes and influencing one of ten possible endings. With such a wide range of possible outcomes, the stakes are high, ensuring that every decision carries significance. The chaos of the unique world burning in wars and intrigues won’t let the players relax and slack off if they want to lead the heroine and her beloved ones to the bright future.
Saintess of the Golden Bow is certainly aimed at the young adult audience, and many moments and heroine’s actions might be relatable for the players. It’s a promising visual novel that blends familiar tropes with fresh twists, offering a classic experience for fans of the otome genre. While the demo version provides a glimpse into the world and its characters, it leaves much to be desired in terms of fully exploring the depth of the story and relationships.
