The SanDisk Extreme Portable for PlayStation 5 and PC is a new external SSD that is now available in two configurations. According to the American manufacturer, this is a more or less rugged drive with an IP65 certification, which means that it should be protected from damage caused by dust and water.
SanDisk further claims that the SSD can withstand drops from a height of almost 10ft. Since flash memory doesn’t have any moving parts, it’s generally less delicate than conventional spinning hard drives, but the Extreme Portable is very robust even by SSD standards.
The solid-state drive connects via USB 3.2 Gen 2 with a maximum transfer speed of 1,000 MB/s. The external SSD weighs just under 2.5 oz and measures approximately 3.97 x 2.07 inches with a thickness of 0.38 inches. It also comes with a five-year manufacturer warranty.
According to SanDisk, the storage has been developed, tested and officially certified for Sony’s PlayStation 5. Needless to say, the drive is also compatible with PCs, smartphones and many other devices with a USB-C port. However, console gamers can look forward to a color scheme and design that was clearly inspired by the PS5. Moreover, a one-month trial of Discord Nitro is included in the official MSRP.
The 1TB variant of the new Extreme Portable is now available for $129, while the external 2TB SSD retails for $199.
I have been active as a journalist for over 10 years, most of it in the field of technology. I worked for Tom’s Hardware and ComputerBase, among others, and have been working for Notebookcheck since 2017. My current focus is particularly on mini PCs and single-board computers such as the Raspberry Pi – so in other words, compact systems with a lot of potential. In addition, I have a soft spot for all kinds of wearables, especially smartwatches. My main profession is as a laboratory engineer, which is why neither scientific contexts nor the interpretation of complex measurements are foreign to me.
My fascination for technology goes back a long way to the Pentium II era. Modding, overclocking and treasuring computer hardware has since become an integral part of my life. As a student, I further developed a keen interest in mobile technologies that can make the stressful college life so much easier. After I fell in love with the creation of digital content while working in a marketing position, I now scour the web to bring you the most exciting topics in the world of tech. Outside the office, I’m particularly passionate about motorsports and mountain biking.
