Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 6 platform is developing on schedule.

Sony Group Corporation released its official financial report for the second quarter of its current fiscal year, which ended September 30. During a conference call with industry investors, CFO Lin Tao confirmed that the design and engineering of the next-generation PlayStation 6 platform is on track. During the three months, the company sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles, bringing its total worldwide shipments to 97.9 million units. The gaming sector demonstrated a 9% revenue increase and an 89% year-over-year increase in operating profit, driven by the expansion of digital services, streamlining of supply chains, and the successful maintenance of hardware margins despite the overall rise in semiconductor prices.

The corporation’s management emphasized that starting in the next fiscal year, April 2027, it will begin direct investments in the deployment of the new gaming platform architecture. The company has already secured stable supplies of RAM and video memory for the planned production volumes of desktop equipment with key vendors, eliminating the risk of component shortages. CEO Hiroki Totoki previously stated that the exact release date for PlayStation 6 is not yet fixed in internal plans, but most industry analysts agree on a possible debut in 2028. By that time, the platform holder plans to completely end factory production of disc-based media and transition retail sales to digital distribution channels.

Following strong performance, the Japanese giant has significantly revised its full-year financial forecasts for its gaming division upward. This was driven by high player engagement, which set a record of 127 million active PlayStation Network users in September, as well as the exclusive Marvel’s Wolverine surpassing 2.4 million copies sold. Experts also note the colossal financial contribution of third-party releases, with Grand Theft Auto VI leading the way with record-breaking pre-orders. The platform provider intends to extend the lifespan of the PlayStation 5 with high-quality releases from its own studios, systematically preparing audiences for the next hardware generation.
