Nintendo has provided a bit of insight into the impact of third-party sales on its platforms.
Nintendo games will always be a big driver in motivating consumers to purchase systems like Switch and Switch 2. However, third-party titles are important as well.
Speaking during a financial results briefing today, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa noted: “Titles from software publishers account for a significant share of software unit sales, making a substantial contribution to our business.” He also said that “their software has a strong presence among download-only titles, and “plays a major role in sustaining engagement with our hardware.”
Furukawa would go on to say:
Nintendo will continue to deliver new play experiences that only we can offer. At the same time, we will deepen our collaboration with software publishers to further enhance the appeal of the platform as a whole.
Furukawa also said today that for third-party games in 2026, “we have increasingly seen multiplatform releases with more demanding hardware requirements being released on Nintendo Switch 2 at the same time as other platforms.” It has additionally “seen new titles developed for Nintendo Switch 2 that take advantage of its distinctive hardware features.” Furukawa said that this is the result of “both improved hardware performance and the relationships we have continued to strengthen with third-party publishers.”
