Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliot has revealed on X that God of War Ragnarok has achieved 21.6 million copies on PlayStation and Steam, generating $1.4 billion in gross revenue — making it PlayStation’s most successful first-party title of the generation.

The analyst also offered details as to why God of War Ragnaork was able to top Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, a game that has huge crossover appeal given that it’s based on a franchise that has massive reach across avenues such as film and comic books. Elliot noted that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a PS5 console exclusive, while God of War Ragnarok is also available for PS4, so Insomniac Games’ sequel misses out on a large install base.

It’s another PlayStation evergreen seller, too. This year, Ragnarok has already sold 1.1M copies, generating nearly $60M (68% on PlayStation), outperforming new 2026 titles like Gears of War E-Day and Saros Overall, Ragnarok has been accessed by 6.7M PlayStation Plus players (it was added to the Extra tier about two years ago). So it’s performed that well this year DESPITE subscription cannibalisation. That’s the pull of God of War IP.

God of War Ragnarok was released for PS5 & PS4 in November 2022, and is the sequel to God of War (2018), and finds Atreus and Kratos navigating the harsh conditions left by the three-year period of Fimbulwinter in Midgard. Unlike the previous game however, all nine realms can be visited by the duo, as they fight against a new range of enemies in order to prevent Ragnarok, which seems them coming into contact with Norse gods such as Thor and Odin.
