Muramasa: Revenant Blades will mark Vanillaware’s first PC release when the action RPG launches on Steam next year. Despite the studio’s long history of console-exclusive games, the decision to support PC came directly from publisher Marvelous.

In an interview with Noisy Pixel, Marvelous producer Makoto Shioda and development director Wataru Nakanishi discussed how the PC version came about and the challenges Vanillaware faced while developing for the platform.

“We didn’t have any particular policy in place regarding PC releases,” Nakanishi explained. “We decided to bring Muramasa to PC when Marvelous proposed releasing it on the platform.”

The team also wanted the returning title to reach as many players as possible, particularly given how long it had been since the previous release.

According to Shioda, Marvelous had been interested in bringing Muramasa to modern platforms for years, but the project only recently became possible.

“There have always been people at Marvelous who wanted to bring Muramasa to modern platforms, myself included,” Shioda said. “We’ve been in discussions with Vanillaware over the years, but now the timing finally worked out for both companies, allowing us to make it happen.”

Moving to PC also presented unfamiliar development challenges for Vanillaware, such as adapting the game’s controls for keyboard and mouse.

“However, this was our first time developing a game for PC, so there was a lot to consider, like how to make the controls feel natural with a keyboard and mouse,” Nakanishi explained.

The team worked through these considerations during development and believes the resulting control scheme is comfortable for PC players.

The release is also notable given Vanillaware’s history of console exclusivity. Games such as Odin Sphere, Dragon’s Crown, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and Unicorn Overlord have yet to receive PC versions. Perhaps if Muramasa’s PC release is successful, it could pave the way for Vanillaware’s catalog to become more widely available on the platform, but that’s just a hopeful guess on our part.

Muramasa: Revenant Blades launches for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on February 4, 2027.
